Virtual Tabletop Platforms (VTT)
Roll20, Foundry VTT, and Owlbear Rodeo explained step by step for those who've never used one.
1
What is a VTT?
A virtual tabletop (VTT) is a program that simulates a game table on a computer. It lets you move tokens on maps, roll dice, and share information with players — all online.
2
Roll20 (roll20.net) — Free, browser-based
The most popular option. No installation needed. You create a "game", upload a map (or use included ones), and players join with a link. Includes virtual dice, character sheets, and built-in chat. Ideal for getting started if you've never used a VTT.
3
Owlbear Rodeo (owlbear.rodeo) — Free, ultra simple
The easiest option. Open the page, upload a map image, create tokens, and share the link. No character sheets or dice — just the map. Perfect if your group manages characters on paper or D&D Beyond and just needs a shared map.
4
Foundry VTT (foundryvtt.com) — One-time purchase (~$50 USD)
The most powerful option. Installs on your computer (you are the server) and has hundreds of add-ons to automate rules, visual effects, and sound. Takes more time to learn but offers the best experience. Recommended after getting familiar with Roll20 or Owlbear.
5
Which one to choose?
- First time running games online: Roll20.
- Just need a shared map: Owlbear Rodeo.
