Discord Setup
Step-by-step guide to setting up Discord as a communication platform for your RPG sessions.
1
What is Discord?
Discord is a free voice, video, and text communication app. It's the most widely used tool by online RPG groups because it allows real-time conversation, file sharing, and organizing channels by topic. Available on desktop, mobile, or browser.
2
Download and setup
1. Go to discord.com and download the app (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android) or use it from the browser.
2. Create an account with your email.
3. Choose a username — you can use your DM name.
3
Create a server for your table
A "server" in Discord is a private space for your group. To create one:
1. In the left sidebar, click the "+" icon.
2. Select "Create Server" and give it a name (example: "D&D Table — Adventure in Eldoria").
3. Share the invite link with your players.
4
Recommended channels
Organize your server with these channels:
- #general — Group conversation outside sessions.
- #announcements — Schedules, date changes, important notices.
- #resources — Character sheets, maps, reference rules.
- #in-character (optional) — For players to write interactions between sessions.
- Voice channel: Session — Where everyone connects to play.
5
Important audio settings
- Go to Settings > Voice & Video.
- Enable noise suppression (eliminates keyboard, fan sounds, etc.).
- Adjust microphone sensitivity so it doesn't pick up background noise.
- Use headphones to avoid echo.
- Test audio with "Mic Test" before the session.
Tip: When you publish a session on Adarle20, mention in the description that you'll use Discord and share the server invite link through Adarle20's integrated chat once players have booked.
