Table Safety Tools

X-Card, Lines & Veils, and Session Zero — everything you need to create a table where everyone feels comfortable.

1

Session Zero

Before starting a campaign, gather the group to define: - Play style: tactical combat, narrative, mystery, humor. - Character creation rules and difficulty level. - Logistics: day, time, duration, platform (Discord, Roll20, in-person). - Content limits (see below). - Commitment expectations: what happens if someone can't attend? On Adarle20, you can use the platform chat to coordinate your Session Zero with players before the first session.
2

Lines and Veils

A system for classifying sensitive topics: - Lines: Topics that will never appear in the game (example: sexual violence, child abuse). They are not mentioned or implied. - Veils: Topics that can exist in the game world but are not described on-screen. The DM says "the scene fades and we continue..." Example: very graphic violence, intense interrogations. Ask your players at the beginning and allow them to respond privately if they prefer.
3

X-Card

A tool for use during the session. If something in a scene makes a player uncomfortable: 1. The player says "X-Card", types "X" in chat, or uses an agreed-upon emoji. 2. The DM stops the scene without asking for explanations. 3. The story continues down a different path. At the start of each session on Adarle20, briefly mention that the X-Card is available. One sentence is enough: "If something makes you uncomfortable, say X-Card and we'll adjust the scene."

Why these tools matter

RPGs can explore intense themes. These tools ensure all players enjoy the experience without crossing personal boundaries. When players know their limits will be respected, they feel more comfortable participating in the story.
5

Best practices

- Mention safety tools before starting every session, not just the first one. - Respect immediately when someone uses a tool — no questions asked. - Adapt the scene without questioning the player. - Remember that limits can change over time.
