Guide for New DMs
Learn the fundamentals of being a Dungeon Master and how to get started running games on Adarle20.
1
What does a Dungeon Master do?
The DM is the narrator and referee of the game. They describe the world, play non-player characters (NPCs), apply the rules, and present challenges. You don't need to know every rule from day one — it's normal to check the manual during the game.
2
Choose your first game
If you've never run a game, start with a short pre-written adventure (a "one-shot" — a single session). Popular systems to begin with: Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Monster of the Week. Pre-written adventures teach you how to structure encounters without inventing everything from scratch.
3
Prepare the minimum you need
Don't build an entire world. For your first session you need:
- A premise: what problem must the players solve?
- A main location: a town, a dungeon, a forest.
- Three or four encounters: a combat, a conversation with an NPC, a puzzle.
- A closing: the villain escapes, a mystery is revealed, the mission is complete.
4
Players create the story with you
Don't write fixed outcomes. Prepare situations and let the players decide how to resolve them. If they do something unexpected, adapt — that's part of the fun.
5
How to get started on Adarle20
1. Create your DM profile and describe your play style.
2. Publish your first session — choose the system, schedule, price, and number of players.
3. Players book their spot and you can communicate with them through the platform's integrated chat.
4. After the session, players leave reviews that help you build your reputation.
6
Final advice
Your first session doesn't have to be perfect. Even DMs with years of experience keep learning. The most important thing is to start, have fun, and improve with each game.
